Washington, D.C. – Congressman André Carson today released the following statement regarding the amendment he sponsored to the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Reauthorization Act. Congressman Carson's amendment, the first amendment he has sponsored in the House, passed by an overwhelming margin and will expand U.S. efforts in combating HIV/AIDS in African countries.

"HIV/AIDS has had a devastating and debilitating impact on several communities and countries throughout the world and particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. The amendment that I offered on the House Floor today will help to combat the spread of this disease on the African continent by allowing post-secondary institutions on that continent to confer with medical experts in America on the most effective ways to treat and prevent the spread of this killer disease.

“My amendment will create a transatlantic medium where ideas can be exchanged between leading African scientists and medical experts at Historically Black Colleges and Universities on innovative techniques that can be employed in combating this deadly illness. My amendment and the underlying Lantos-Hyde bill will go a long way towards aiding needy countries inundated with high incidences of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria."
