Congressman Carson on the Passing of Melvin Simon Print

September 16, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS – Congressman André Carson issued the following statement about the passing of Melvin Simon.

“I was saddened this morning to learn of the passing of local businessman and philanthropist, Melvin Simon. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Simon family.

“Mr. Simon was an iconic figure on so many levels. His rise from humble beginnings to extraordinary success exemplifies the American dream. Through his hard work and business savvy, Mr. Simon was able to transform a modest real estate investment company into one of the largest retail operations in the nation—himself, becoming one of the most influential private-sector leaders of his time.

“But it was Mr. Simon’s commitment to Indianapolis and her people that will be missed the most. You can’t visit our world-class downtown today without seeing first-hand the influence and vision of Mr. Simon. And certainly, his philanthropic endeavors have helped change—and in the case of his extraordinary support of the IU Simon Cancer Center—save the lives of so many Hoosiers and people across the nation.

“While we mourn the loss of Mr. Simon, his legacy will live on in this community for decades to come.”
