Carson Secures $3.8 Million for Indianapolis Flood Control Project Print

October 1, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C.– The Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act passed today by the U.S. House of Representatives includes $3.8 million for an Indianapolis north-side flood control project, Congressman André Carson announced today.

The project involves the construction of a 7600-foot levee and the installation of a flood warning system to help protect 1,400 properties and hundreds of families along the northern reaches of the White River in Marion County.

Congressman Carson made the appropriations request on behalf of the City of Indianapolis, which is working in partnership with the Army Corp of Engineers to complete this critical infrastructure project.

“From the tragic images of Katrina to the floods that hit communities throughout our state every year, we’re reminded all too often of the devastation caused by floodwaters,” Congressman Carson said. “While infrastructure improvements like the Indy North project rarely grab big headlines, they’re vital to sustaining our neighborhoods and protecting families and businesses across our city.”

“I’m pleased we were able to again secure funding to continue the construction of this vital floodwall and better prepare our community for any future flood events along this northern stretch of the White River.”

While the House passed the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act today, the Senate has yet to vote on the bill. The final $3.8 million appropriation is contingent on Senate action, which is expected within the next two weeks.
