Indianapolis Housing Agency Secures More Recovery Act Funding Print
September 23, 2009

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman André Carson praised the Indianapolis Housing Agency (IHA) after it received a $3.7 million grant to renovate a local affordable housing community and make the units more energy efficient. Today’s award is in addition to an $8.5 million HUD grant secured two weeks ago by IHA, marking a landmark September for the local housing authority.

The $3.7 million—funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act—is part of a HUD program to create energy-efficient communities by rehabilitating existing public housing units. The funding will support the “greening” affordable housing units, including the installation of new energy-efficient technologies to conserve energy, such as Energy Star appliances, high-efficiency boilers/furnaces and programmable thermostats or controls.

“Today’s grant announcement is yet another reminder of the tremendous impact the Recovery Act is having on our local community,” Congressman Carson said. “This award from HUD is a trifecta for Indianapolis—it helps revitalize our public housing communities, reduces energy consumption, and spurs local investment that creates and supports jobs for working-class Hoosiers.

“Congratulations to IHA for successfully competing to bring these resources back to the 7th Congressional district.”
