Congressman Carson Supports Emmis Communications, Free Press in Hungary Print
December 9, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS– Congressman André Carson supported a bill passed by the House calling on the Hungarian government to reverse a decision that shut down a national radio station operated by Indianapolis-based Emmis Communications last month.

The Republic of Hungary awarded Emmis Communications one of two 12-year licenses back in 1997.  Emmis created Slager Radio, a top-rated radio station that reached approximately 3.5 million people. In November, the Hungarian government revoked the station’s license and awarded operating control to one of the country’s political parties.

“The Hungarian government’s actions are not only a slap in the face to one of our premier local companies, Emmis Communications, but also a major set back for the Hungarian people,” said Congressman Carson, who co-sponsored the resolution.  “When something like this happens and the people are denied access to a free press, then the country and the democratic process suffer.”
