Carson Votes to Extend Tax Breaks for Donations to Haiti Print
January 20, 2010
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman André Carson issued the following statement after voting to pass legislation that will allow individuals to claim an itemized charitable tax deduction on their 2009 tax return for donations made to the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti:
“Last week, we all witnessed with shock and sadness the incredible destruction caused the earthquakes in Haiti.  Since then, I have been proud to witness the American public‘s tremendous outpouring of generosity and assistance—sending money, food and clothing and volunteering their time and talents to help the people of Haiti.
“However, much more assistance is needed as hundreds of thousands remain homeless and in need of food.  This important legislation will provide a tax deduction for these charitable contributions, offering an additional incentive and reward to those willing to help.
“Today, my thoughts and prayers remain with the victims of this terrible disaster. I remain hopeful that with the continued generosity of the American public and the international community, many more lives will be saved and the Haitian people will get all the support they desperately need.”
