Carson Accepting Academy Nomination Applications
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman André Carson today reminded students that the deadline to accept applications for service academy nominations is approaching quickly.
"Our service academies present our young Hoosiers with an incredible opportunity to not only attend some of the best educational programs in our nation, but to also serve their country," said Congressman Carson. "Admission to these academies opens doors to individuals from all walks of life, and I encourage all interested students to pursue a nomination and apply."
Students who are accepted into one of the academies - U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Coast Guard Academy - receive full paid tuition and a modest living stipend. Eligible applicants must be at least 17 years old but not have passed their 23rd birthday. They must be a U.S. citizen, unmarried and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
Each member of Congress can nominate 10 applicants to each Academy every year-giving 40 students from Marion County the opportunity to pursue admission. Receiving a congressional nomination is required for admission (except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy), but receiving a nomination does not guarantee admission to an academy. Academy admissions offices evaluates each candidate's high school record, class rank, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, fitness exam and moral character before making their selections.
Interested candidates who have not yet contacted their service academy of choice should do so immediately to allow enough time to complete their admission's file.
Interested applicants must submit all required materials to Congressman Carson's office before the November 1st deadline.
Additional information and application for the Congressional Nomination can be obtained on Congressman Carson's website at www.carson.house.gov or by contacting his Indianapolis office at 317-283-6516.
