Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, 2 years later.
Indiana is receiving billions of dollars for new roads, bridges, clean drinking water, internet access, and more – and it’s all thanks to a bill I voted for in my senior role on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and that President Biden signed into law 2 years ago today.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been lauded by experts as one of the most monumental investments in our nation’s infrastructure in history, and it’s not hard to see why. Here are just some of the ways the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is delivering for the Hoosier state:
Highways and Bridges: Indiana is home to 1,040 bridges and over 4,118 miles of highway in poor condition. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will rebuild our roads and includes the single largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system. Based on formula funding alone, Indiana is expected to receive approximately $6.9 billion over five years in federal funding for highways and bridges.
Internet: Internet is a necessity, not a luxury. It’s essential for Americans to do their jobs, participate in school, access health care, and stay connected. But over 202,021 homes and small businesses in Indiana do not have access to high-speed internet infrastructure. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests $65 billion to provide affordable, high-speed internet to everyone in America. The Biden-Harris Administration worked with internet providers to offer high-speed internet plans that are fully covered by the Affordable Connectivity Program — meaning most eligible households can now get high-speed internet without paying a dime.
Water: Tragedies like what happened in Flint, Michigan should never again be a reality in the wealthiest country in the world. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law represents the largest investment in water infrastructure in American history, including the first-ever dedicated federal funding to replace lead service lines and address dangerous PFAS chemicals. To date, $324 million has been announced to Indiana to provide clean and safe water across the state and improve water infrastructure. We’re making sure no child is ever exposed to contaminated water.
Public Transit: In Indianapolis, IndyGo provides thousands of jobs AND connects even more Indy residents to all that our city has to offer. That’s why I recommended the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s largest investment in public transit in U.S. history. Indiana expects to receive approximately $673 million over five years under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve public transit across the state. This will expand healthy, sustainable transportation options in Indiana, where non-white households are 4.5 times more likely to commute via public transportation and 39% of transit vehicles in the state are currently past useful life.
Make no mistake: we’re working hard so America has the very best foundation to ensure more families succeed – regardless of where you live or where you come from. When every American can easily travel to jobs, buy groceries, visit family, and access basic necessities like internet and water at home, we can shape America into what it was always meant to be: a true land of opportunity.
