Protecting and Strengthening Social Security

Past E-Newsletters

A lot has changed in 84 years, but one thing hasn’t – the sacred promise of Social Security.

84 years ago this week, Ida May Fuller received the first-ever Social Security check, a program based on the principle that seniors should be able to retire with dignity after a lifetime of work. But benefits have not been enhanced in more than 50 years, and many of my Republican colleagues are now trying to cut the program. Republicans have voted to cut funding(link is external) for the Social Security Administration by 30% and now want to slash earned benefits through a fast-track commission(link is external) aimed at cutting Social Security.

That’s why alongside nearly 200 of my Democratic colleagues, I introduced the Social Security 2100 Act to enhance benefits and protect the promise of Social Security for years to come.

My district alone is home to 123,225 Social Security recipients receiving a grand total of $197 million in monthly benefits. That’s money you’ve earned – and Republicans have no right to take it away.

The Social Security 2100 Act would reject these harmful cuts and enhance benefits for the first time in more than 50 years. We must ensure we preserve the legacy of Social Security now and for generations to come. Make no mistake: I’ll never give up that fight.

Honoring Hoosier Women Veterans:

Our latest recipient of the Sheila Corcoran Hoosier Women Hero Award is Indiana State Representative Renee Pack!

Representative Pack proudly served in the United States Army from 1986 to 1991 and has remained a steadfast advocate for veterans’ rights in her role as State Representative – including with House Bill 1088 to prevent landlords from discriminating against veterans during the application process. In addition, she has extensive experience as an educator and in the field of counseling, with a dedication to equitable and inclusive schools and healthy communities. I’m honored to present Representative Pack with this award, which highlights the often-underrecognized women in our community who so bravely served our country.

Economy Update:

The numbers don’t lie: our economy grew at a strong pace of 3.3% in the final quarter of 2023. Democrats passed policies that put job creation and the middle class first. As a result, we avoided a recession, and our post-pandemic recovery is stronger than ever. While this is a major milestone, our work is far from over. I’ll never stop fighting for the hardworking, middle-class Americans that make our country so great.
