INDIANAPOLIS - Today, Congressman Carson issued the following statement after Senator Evan Bayh announced he will not be seeking reelection in 2010:
"For more than two decades, Evan Bayh has represented the great State of Indiana with courage and conviction, standing up for true Hoosier values and doing all he could to move our state forward. Throughout his storied career--as Secretary of State, Governor and Senator--he consistently rose above partisan rancor to unite his colleagues and constituents behind common-sense solutions to the difficult problems facing our state and nation. Hoosiers across Indiana will deeply miss his service.
"Senator Bayh is rightly held among the legends of Indiana politics as an unyielding proponent of policies that embody the most deeply ingrained Hoosier principles--from reforming Wall Street and growing small businesses to expanding educational opportunities and cutting taxes. In recent months, he has worked tirelessly to put people back to work, to rebuild our crumbling economy and to ensure that future generations can enjoy the strong and prosperous state that he has always worked to create. The departure of this faithful representation, based in his strong character and stalwart resolve, will surely leave a significant void in Congress.
"While I am greatly saddened and disappointed by his decision to retire from the United States Senate, I am confident that he will continue to serve his beloved state and nation as he always has. As the 111th Congress continues forward, I look forward to working with Senator Bayh to see that his unfinished work on behalf of all Hoosiers is carried on for years to come."
