Carson Statement on Chairman Nunes

Apr 6, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTONToday, Congressman André Carson, Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement:

“Recent actions by Chairman Nunes have called into question his commitment to the fair and bipartisan operation of the House Intelligence Committee. As we continue our investigation into Russian meddling in our democracy, I am deeply concerned about his secret visit to the White House to view classified documents, his decision to brief the President and the press ahead of his committee colleagues, and his ongoing refusal to share the details about his accusations. I am also disturbed by his decision to remove public transparency by cancelling our recent public hearing. These behaviors are highly irregular and call into question the credibility of the Committee as an investigative body.

“The House Intelligence Committee has historically sought to overcome partisanship in pursuit of effective oversight. Through countless challenges to our national security, this cooperation has allowed us to keep the Intelligence Community effective and honest as it fights to keep our country safe. I have served with Chairman Nunes on the Intelligence Committee for two years and know him to be a patriotic and dedicated public servant. However, Chairman Nunes has made it clear that he is unable or unwilling to separate his partisan allegiances from his responsibility to investigate Russian influence in our election and the Administration. For this reason, I am calling on Chairman Nunes to recuse himself from this investigation. Only through his recusal can we ensure the integrity and objectivity of the process. With our democracy on the line, the American people deserve nothing less.”
