Congressman Carson's statement on President Obama's address on the threat posed by ISIL
Washington, D.C. – Congressman André Carson (IN-07) released the following statement following tonight’s Presidential address.
“Tonight, the President addressed the continued advancement of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The unprecedented gains ISIL is making in Iraq and Syria threaten to destabilize more than just the region. By capturing major cities, sophisticated weaponry, oil fields and other forms of financing, ISIL has the resources to pose a real threat to our national security.
“I stand by the President’s decision to work with our allies and expand support for the Iraqi military and Syrian rebels. By providing training to the rebels and air strike support in Iraq, the United States and our allies can significantly degrade ISIL.
“I will be keeping in close contact with the White House. If the President intends to extend this campaign beyond what he has outlined tonight, he has an obligation to come before Congress for proper authorization. After more than a decade of war, the American people are not prepared for another prolonged conflict. I will hesitate to provide any additional authorization without significant consultation.”
