Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Today, Congressman Carson issued the following statement in commemoration of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Today, we honor the legacy of a man who reminded all of us of our shared humanity by pushing love over hate and peace over division. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message continues to resonate today, inspiring us to set aside our prejudices and pursue opportunity and justice for all people.

“As we celebrate Dr. King’s 90th birthday, we should remember his caution that “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” At this difficult time in our nation’s history, his lesson rings especially true. Regardless of political persuasion, we cannot stay silent in the face of persistent efforts to disenfranchise voters, widen the income gap, and allow discrimination based on race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and country of origin.

“Across our country, it is time to move past partisan politics and recommit ourselves to lifting up our neighbors who are struggling, voiceless, fighting for justice and equality, or searching for a better life. As we carry on Dr. King’s march toward a more just world, we cannot stay silent.”
