Congressman Carson Statement on Supreme Court’s Decision on President Trump’s Muslim Ban
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman André Carson, (D-IN), the first Muslim Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, issued the following statement after the Supreme Court announced its decision on Trump v. Hawaii:
“Today’s decision will be remembered as a shameful sanctioning of discrimination, and one that history will judge harshly.
“We have already seen President Trump’s Muslim Ban tear apart many of our communities and separate families, and I fear that today’s decision will embolden anti-Muslim rhetoric and xenophobia here at home and abroad. The Administration may have found a way to dress up the Muslim ban so it can pass legal muster, but the fact remains that it was driven by discrimination, and does nothing to keep us safe.
“Moving forward, our mission is clear: Congress must act as a meaningful check on an administration hostile to religious freedom, and continue to fight broader efforts to discriminate against immigrants and religious minorities.
“America is a nation of immigrants, and we welcome and accept individuals from all backgrounds and nations. While today’s decision is wrong, in the long arc of history the American people will find a better path.”
