Rep. Carson Statement on Expanded Muslim Ban
Washington, DC – Congressman André Carson released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s announcement that it is including six additional countries to its Travel Ban – Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania.
“As I have said many times in response to news coming out of this administration: I’m saddened but not surprised.
“I’m not surprised that President Trump chose to expand his cruel Muslim Ban so close to its three-year-anniversary. I’m not surprised that the countries included are home to many Muslims, whom he has mercilessly denigrated to score political points. And I’m not surprised that many on this new list are also African nations, which he has previously insulted in some of the most vulgar and offensive ways. As a Muslim and a Black man, it pains me to witness this low moment for our country.
“The Muslim Ban has kept countless families separated, dimmed America’s reputation as a beacon of light, and it hasn’t made us any safer. But for President Trump, this policy has never been about national security. From his first day in office, he has worked to advance an extreme, far-right agenda, and the Muslim Ban is its cornerstone.
“I will continue working tirelessly to reverse this bad policy. Our greatest hope to achieve this is by passing the No Ban Act, legislation I have co-authored that will help end this painful chapter in the story of America, and ensure history never again repeats itself in this way. This isn’t the first time our nation has shut its doors to those in need simply because of their faith. But if we unite to pass this bill, we can help ensure it will be the last.”
