Celebrating Infrastructure Week
Friend,
Every day, Americans rely on our nation’s roads, highways, public transit, and water systems.
That’s why I helped pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law two years ago – and thanks to this historic investment, we’re already delivering results.
Since the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed, approximately $3 billion has been announced for transportation in Indiana alone, to fund roads, bridges, public transit, ports, and airports. In addition, roughly $324 million has been announced for clean water improvements in the Hoosier state.
While growing the economy with the creation of good-paying union jobs, Hoosiers will see real results.
Here’s how these investments break down:
ROADS AND BRIDGES: Indiana is home to 1,111 bridges and over 5,478 miles of highway in poor condition. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will rebuild our roads and includes the single largest dedicated bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system. Based on formula funding alone, Indiana is expected to receive approximately $6.9 billion over five years in federal funding for highways and bridges.
WATER: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law represents the largest investment in clean drinking water in American history, including the first-ever dedicated federal funding to replace lead service lines and address dangerous PFAS chemicals. $325 million has been announced to Indiana to provide clean and safe water across the state and improve water infrastructure. Of this funding, $108.5 million is dedicated to lead pipe and service line replacement, with another $63.6 million for safe drinking water investments that can also support lead pipe replacement in fiscal year 2022 and 2023.
PUBLIC TRANSIT: Indiana will receive approximately $673 million over five years under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve public transit across the state. In Indiana, non-white households are 4.5 times more likely to commute via public transportation, and 39% of transit vehicles in the state are currently past their useful life. To date, Indiana has been allocated $128.8 million to improve public transportation options across the state – including $33 million to IndyGo for a new facility that will help expand its bus fleet and bring Indianapolis public transit into the future.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) CHARGING: The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has allocated $36 million to Indiana for 2022 and 2023 to build out a network of EV chargers across the state. By 2025, EVs and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) will account for an estimated 30% of all vehicle sales – and we must ensure we have charging infrastructure to meet this demand – and ensure minority and disadvantaged communities are not left behind. That’s why I’ve advocated for additional funding so EV infrastructure is distributed equitably in communities across the country.
INTERNET: High-speed internet is necessary for Americans to do their jobs, participate in school, access health care, and stay connected – but nearly 25% of Hoosiers do not have an internet subscription. Indiana will receive at least $100 million to help ensure high-speed internet coverage across the state. Additionally, experts estimate that as many as 1,000,000 households in Indiana are eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program, which cuts internet bills by up to $30 per month, or $75 for households on Tribal lands, and provides a one-time $100 discount off a connected device. The Biden-Harris Administration is providing further cost savings by working with internet providers to offer high-speed internet plans that are fully covered by the Affordable Connectivity Program — meaning most eligible households can now get high-speed internet without paying a dime. CLEAN ENERGY AND POWER: Power outages cost the U.S. economy more than $70 billion annually. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will the grid more resilient and build thousands of miles of new transmission lines to deliver clean, affordable electricity. Around $116.6 million has already been allocated to Indiana for clean energy, energy efficiency, and power in 2022 and 2023. These efforts will help improve energy efficiency of homes and lower energy costs for impacted households by an average of $372 per year.
From the streets we drive on to the water we drink, I’m working to improve our nation’s infrastructure and bring it into the future. These historic investments will continue to make positive changes – now, and for generations to come.
