The future of rail.
Last week, President Biden announced a plan to deliver world-class high-speed rail across the country – all thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
If you’ve heard me talk about the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law before, it’s because this monumental legislation continues to deliver for our communities. From improving sidewalks, to expanding internet access, to much-needed road repairs, every corner of our country will be impacted.
This latest announcement marks the largest investment in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak 50 years ago, and I’m making sure Indianapolis gets its fair share. Amtrak services between Indianapolis and Chicago will receive significant improvements, including starting daily service between these two destinations, plus updates to make this trip even more efficient. There is also funding to plan a new rail corridor between Indianapolis and Louisville.
But why is passenger rail so important to our community?
For starters, passenger rail can be faster than car, bus, or plane in urban areas. In particular, road and highway congestion can cost the U.S. billions of dollars, including by wasting fuel and wasting time sitting in traffic. The average commuter in urban areas loses more than 40 hours per year – the equivalent of a week of vacation – to highway traffic delays. It’s important to invest in better roads and other travel modes to cut down on traffic congestion, which the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law also supports. But rail is a key piece to the puzzle of giving commuters and travelers as many options as possible. Traveling by rail can also be more productive for those who want to work or study during their commute when they’re not driving.
When our communities are better connected, it opens up a wealth of opportunity. Expanding passenger rail service is estimated to generate $30 billion in direct investments in our communities and reduce carbon emissions by nearly 50% when compared to car travel. It also provides good-paying jobs that can’t be exported, setting our communities up for long-term success.
The key to a stronger, brighter future is ensuring that people are better connected. The expansion of passenger rail will help our economy and the heart of our country thrive.
Economy Update: Jobs, Jobs, and More Jobs!
November’s jobs report reveals the creation of 199,000 new jobs just last month – a running total of more than 14 MILLION new jobs since President Biden came into office.
How did this happen? It was no accident – it’s a result of Democratic-led initiatives like the CHIPS and Science Act, Inflation Reduction Act, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. With a renewed focus on manufacturing and investments in the clean energy sector of the future, we’re getting back to basics. Everyone in America deserves the opportunity to succeed, and that means the chance to have a good-paying, meaningful career, no matter your background.
Unemployment has fallen to 3.7% nationwide, with average hourly earnings up 4% from a year ago. In fact, the unemployment rate has remained below 4% for 22 months in a row, with inflation falling by two-thirds.
These are all encouraging signs that show President Biden’s and Democrats’ strategy is working – but it doesn’t mean we should stop focusing on continuing to lower costs, strengthen the middle class, and build a system that works for everyone. I’ll keep working for you to shape a more prosperous future for all.
