Hoosiers Helping Hoosiers: Mozel Sanders' Inspiring Thanksgiving Tradition
On Thanksgiving Day in 1972, Reverend Dr. Mozel Sanders, the beloved pastor of the Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Speedway, served a hearty meal to those less fortunate in the surrounding Hawthorne neighborhood. What began as a small way of giving back has evolved into the Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving Day Dinner, one of our city's most celebrated philanthropic events.
This year, three thousand volunteers came together to prepare 15,000 pounds of turkey, 10,000 pounds of dressing, 80,000 dinner rolls and more. Their dedication provided more than 40,000 meals to Hoosiers who might otherwise go without.
I was honored to take part in this wonderful occasion and meet with volunteers. Their generosity and dedication embodies the spirit of Thanksgiving and reflects what makes Hoosiers so special.

Flipping the Switch on the Holiday Season
Last weekend, my family and I joined tens of thousands of Hoosiers and visitors from around the world for the 50th anniversary of the Circle of Lights Celebration, presented by the Quality Connection Contractors and IBEW 481 Electrical Workers.
Mariama, Salimah, and I were honored to join the Ballards, Kevin Gregory, Briley Schmitz and Santa in flipping the switch that transforms Monument Circle into the world's tallest Christmas Tree.
If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to come downtown to see this incredible holiday destination for yourself.
The December 31st Deadline Approaches for Victims of Wrongful Foreclosure
Many homeowners have faced financial difficulty as a result of our economic downturn. While we have seen marked improvement, many Americans are still "underwater"—that is, the value of their homes is worth less than the money owed on their mortgage, and millions lost their homes to foreclosure when they could no longer afford their payments.
The Department of Justice and other federal regulators, in cooperation with 49 state attorney generals—including Indiana's—have announced that a settlement has been reached with five of the largest mortgage servicers for mistakes, misrepresentations and other inappropriate conduct involving foreclosures finalized in 2009 and 2010. Borrowersmay be eligible for up to $125,000 in cash or other compensation due to the mishandling of their loan and subsequent foreclosure. Regrettably, only about 5% of eligible borrowers have applied.
To ensure that borrowers receive the assistance they deserve, I have advocated for extending the deadline and pushed for efforts to ensure adequate participation. The deadline for eligible borrowers to apply is December 31, 2012. I want to reassure all eligible borrowers that settlement applications will not disrupt any modification you have already applied for or received. If you think you might be eligible, I encourage you to apply.

In the Spirit of the Season…
After the shopping frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it can be easy to forget the true meaning of the holiday season. As we look toward Christmas and the New Year, I hope you will consider supporting those who are less fortunate through volunteer work and philanthropy. No matter what your passions, there are organizations all over the city who would greatly appreciate your time and treasure.
Let us know how you will be giving back this year at carsonbeheard@mail.house.gov.
