Housing costs are crushing families across America. Whether you're trying to buy your first home, find an affordable apartment, or keep a roof over your family's head, housing has become too expensive.
In 1865, Unions soldiers – many of whom were Black – brought news to Galveston, Texas: “In accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”
President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had been in effect for more than two years, but the news had still not reached enslaved Americans in Texas. Today, 161 years later, we celebrate the long fight for freedom, and the people who so bravely fought for it – and continue to fight.
Here’s how I’ve been fighting for you in Congress:
A check on Trump’s war in Iran:
Last week, the House of Representatives passed a war powers resolution to end Trump’s war in Iran.
Trump’s illegal war has caused gas prices to skyrocket and put our brave service members at risk. This isn’t about politics – it’s about the Constitution and returning war-making authority to the people. This war has made our country less safe, risked a broader regional war, and raised costs for American families.
Everything from gas to groceries to housing is too expensive right now.
Donald Trump and Republicans are only making things worse, from reckless tariffs to surging gas prices due to the war in Iran.
That’s why today I’m announcing the New Affordability Agenda, 10 big new ideas to bring down the cost of everything from gas to prescription drugs to groceries and housing.
Last week, the House passed a bill to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian immigrants – a win for the estimated 50,000 Haitian immigrants who call Indiana home.
I proudly voted for this bill and helped force the measure to the floor through a discharge petition – a process that moves a bill to the House floor when Republican leadership refuses to act.
In just the last few weeks, gas prices have skyrocketed because of Trump’s war with Iran.
Last week, I voted against threats to our right to vote.
The Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act actually does nothing to make our elections better.
The SAVE Act:
I want to share a story about Roodens, Jessica, and their 3-year-old son, Wens from Indianapolis.
The family contacted my office because they had a problem: Wens, a U.S. citizen born in Haiti, could not come home to Indianapolis because of a paperwork issue. His parents needed to secure paperwork from the American Embassy in Port Au Prince, but it wasn’t easy. In Haiti, armed groups control up to 90 percent of the capital. The nation is in turmoil – and the simple act of getting to the embassy was turning out to be nearly impossible.
This week, I voted against an appropriations bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security for Fiscal Year 2026 because it failed to stop the unlawful actions and abuses by ICE.
