Warren Township Schools Get National Recognition
The U.S. Department of Education announced this week that the MSD of Warren Township has received $28.5 million in District-Race to the Top grants. Warren Township was selected from an applicant pool of 370 districts nationwide, and they are the only Indiana school system to receive the coveted recognition.
Race to the Top seeks out school districts who exemplify a vision for academic excellence and a relentless pursuit of innovation - characteristics that clearly describe our east side school system. Earlier today, I was honored to join Warren Township Superintendent Dena Cushenberry, Deputy Mayor for Education Jason Kloth, and members of the Warren Central High School faculty and staff to celebrate this milestone accomplishment. I look forward to the impact this award will have not only for their students, but for the entire Indianapolis educational community.

Ensuring Continued Economic Growth
The Labor Department's latest jobs report shows that our economy continues to improve with the unemployment rate falling to 7.7 percent, the lowest since 2008. While this is welcomed news, we still face significant challenges and the looming fiscal cliff has the potential to undo our progress.
I continue to call upon my colleagues in Congress to act swiftly to avert the fiscal cliff and to protect 2.4 million Hoosier families from seeing a dramatic tax increase in January. With less than four weeks until the deadline, it is critical that members of both parties work together to find a balanced, bipartisan solution. That means protecting the middle class from unnecessary tax increases, while also looking for responsible ways that we can reduce our debt and deficit.
We cannot allow partisan posturing to derail our economic recovery. Rest assured, I will continue to pressure my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that Hoosier families and small businesses will not have to pay the high price for partisan gridlock.
