Dear Friend:

Thank you for reading another edition of my e-newsletter, the Carson Courier. For additional information on these and other topics, please visit my website at https://www.carson.house.gov.

In this week's Carson Courier:

  • Addressing Child Hunger in Our Community

For many children, summer is a time for playing outdoors, going to camp, visiting the local swimming pool and taking the time to read a good book. But for students in low-income areas, summer fun brings with it serious challenges as well. On average, children from lower income families rely on school meals for 50 percent of their daily nutrients and caloric intake. During the summer months and extended vacations, these meals have often not been available.

Today, I was honored to take part in the Summer Servings Kick-Off Event at Riverside Park in Indianapolis, an organization that is tackling child hunger head on. Thanks to the efforts of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, city officials, and local organizations like Second Helpings, Gleaners, Elanco and the Indy Hunger Network, Summer Servings provides free, nutritious meals and snacks to children at approved sites all over the city.

I'm a proud supporter of the USDA Summer Food Service Programs, and I will continue fighting to protect these invaluable nutrition programs. This is one of the smartest investments we can make in our community, and Summer Servings is an excellent example of how federal and local governments in concert with local businesses and non-profits can come together to address serious problems impacting our city. I encourage everyone to do their part by spreading the word about Summer Servings.

For more information on how to find a location nearest you, I encourage you to visit the official Summer Servings website or call the 2-1-1 hotline.
