INDIANAPOLIS AWARDED $22.9 MILLION IN ARRA FUNDING

This week, I, alongside Mayor Ballard, announced plans to restore many of Indianapolis' most deteriorated streets and bridges with $22.9 million in federal stimulus funding. The funding, which was awarded as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, will create and retain approximately 550 local jobs as well as improve quality of life in Indianapolis neighborhoods.
The street and bridge projects were selected based on the frequency of street maintenance and repairs conducted by the Indiana Department of Public Works in the area and resident complaints.

This ARRA funding provides opportunities to stimulate local, long-term economic growth. According to the US Department of Transportation, for every $1 million invested, 25 jobs will be created and/or sustained in Indianapolis. These improvements to our neighborhoods will provide a needed jolt to our local economy. Moreover, this $22 million infusion makes a substantial investment in areas of our city that need it most and encourages the private sector to make investments further down the line. TREVOR YAGER TO ACCOMPANY FIRST LADY DURING STATE OF THE UNION

Indianapolis resident, Trevor Yager, head of TrendyMinds advertising and public relations, will have the honor of sitting with First Lady Michelle Obama during the State of the Union speech this Wednesday. Yager has credited the federal stimulus package for providing a needed boost to the local economy. While other businesses have forced to shut down or lay off workers, TrendyMinds' business has been expanding. Speaking to the Indianapolis Star, Yager applauded President Obama's efforts to grow the economy and reduce unemployment: "People expect things to change so quickly. When you grow a business, you can't expect to become number one in your field overnight. You have to stay the course. You have to make sure you're looking at every small detail that's going to add up, that's going to help us move forward."

THE COLTS HEAD TO THE SUPER BOWL

I am excited and proud to congratulate the Indianapolis Colts on yet another AFC Championship and their second trip to the Super Bowl in four years!

This franchise is to be commended not only because of their record-setting performances on the field, but also for the way they embody our city off of it. The Colts organization has been deeply involved in our community-leading numerous charitable causes and going above and beyond to help those in need. This football team has been a source of tremendous pride for so many and has set a benchmark for professionalism in the NFL. I have no doubt that the Indianapolis Colts will represent our city and state in spectacular fashion on sports' biggest stage. Mariama and I look forward to cheering the Colts on to victory in Miami, as they continue their push to deliver a second world championship to our world-class city.
