Extending Tax Cuts for the Middle Class

Assuming Leadership Position
This week, I am deeply honored to have been selected to serve as a Regional Whip for the Democratic Caucus in the upcoming 112th Congress. As a whip, I will assist House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer in counting votes and rallying Democratic members from Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma in support of crucial legislative initiatives. I look forward to using this position to provide a greater voice in Congress to my constituents in the 7th District.

House Passes Landmark Child Nutrition Legislation
In an effort to help children gain access to the nutrition they need to be healthy, active and successful, the House voted to approve the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This legislation will deliver $300 million to states, including $7.8 million to Indiana, to provide more nutritious meals to millions of children who rely on them for the basic nutrition they need to grow and learn. Over the next several years, 31 million children will gain access to programs expanded and improved under this critical legislation. By passing the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and sending it to the President for his signature, we are preparing our kids to excel in the classroom.

Extending Tax Cuts for the Middle Class
This week, the House approved a measure to permanently maintain tax cuts for American families earning less than $250,000. Middle-class families can now expect to see an average tax savings of approximately $1,000 per year-helping them and bolstering the economy. By not providing this relief, many families would have no choice but to cut back on spending for essential goods and services like groceries, gas and rent. It is my hope that the Senate approves this legislation before the Congress adjourns so that we can finally take this important step towards continued economic recovery.
