Carson in Your Corner: A Social Security Success Story
Recently, a constituent named Paul reached out to me and my staff for assistance. Struggling with debilitating back problems that made it impossible for him to work, Paul applied for disability benefits and was denied. He appealed the decision and waited for months without a result. To make matters worse, Paul's wife, Anne, was also suffering from heart problems and diabetes and undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer. Paul and Anne were barely making ends meet, living off her Social Security benefits. After Paul contact my office, we reached out to the Social Security Administration and in less than two weeks, Paul received a check for $1,086, which helped him to put food on the table, pay for his medications, and put gas in the tank. While the results in every case will vary depending on the agency and specific facts, my staff is willing to go to bat for our constituents like Paul and Anne. Please do not hesitate to reach out. We are here to serve the people of the 7th District.
Workers' Rights Under Attack
Over the past few weeks, Speaker Boehner has pushed for passage of the misnamed Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act, which would further undermine labor rights in the United States. This bill is part of a wholesale attack on the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which, if successful, could obliterate the ability of employees to organize in order to combat unsafe working conditions and efforts to ship jobs overseas. GOP House leadership has even sought to attack the NLRB's requirement that employees be notified of their legal rights. I will continue to oppose efforts like these that aim to hurt American workers.
A Critical Message About Medicare Open Enrollment
Just a reminder, the Open Enrollment period for signing up for Medicare ends on December 7. I encourage all my seniors that do not receive these benefits to sign up in order to receive lower prescription costs, annual wellness visits, and more preventive care.
