77th Anniversary of Social Security
This week, Americans across the country celebrated the 77th anniversary of Social Security. It was on August 17, 1935, that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed Social Security into law, making a commitment to assist our seniors in their golden years. It is a promise our nation has kept for more than 7 decades and one that we must continue to honor.
Today, more than ever, our seniors rely on Social Security to help pay for prescription drugs, groceries, and any number of other unexpected expenses. As your Representative, I intend to keep the promises made to our seniors and the millions of Americans who have paid into and will someday rely on Social Security benefits.

In Defense of Amtrak & Protecting Jobs in Central Indiana

At the Amtrak Maintenance Facilities in Beech Grove, the industrious, highly skilled technicians, electricians and engineers have made their facility one of best performing in the nation. I have continuously stood by this facility and the more than 800 employees who rely on it.

Two years ago, I proudly stood beside Vice President Biden to announce that American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars would be invested into this facility, saving and creating hundreds of jobs in Central Indiana and helping to modernize our passenger rail system which spans over 21,000 miles, employs more than 20,000 Americans, and serves more than 30 million Americans annually.
On multiple occasions, Republicans in Congress have targeted Amtrak funding as a source of potential budget cuts. Rather than working together to come up with a balanced solution to deficit reduction, the GOP continues to put forth misguided plans, with an eye solely on the bottom line and not the countless families it would adversely affect.
I assure our friends in Beech Grove and throughout the 7th District that I will continue to fight for Amtrak and stand against efforts to kill jobs on Indy's south side.
