In this week's Carson Courier:

  • Celebrating Thanksgiving and Giving Thanks

In 1863, as the fate of our Union hung in the balance, President Abraham Lincoln sought to heal our divisions by proclaiming a national holiday to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November. Ultimately, that holiday – Thanksgiving – would be moved to the fourth Thursday of November by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Today, Thanksgiving serves as the perfect time for us to again unify and reaffirm our commitment to overcoming America's challenges. We must draw strength and comfort from previous generations, whose strength and resolve has always ensured the continuation of our great nation.

This time-honored American tradition also makes me reflect on the sacrifices that others make to keep this nation safe and secure. We must never take for granted the freedoms and security we enjoy due to the enduring sacrifices made by our brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces. These patriots are willing to lay down their lives in our defense, and they and their families deserve our profound gratitude for their service. During these uncertain economic times, we are also reminded of those experiencing the pangs of hunger and the difficulty of making ends meet. As your Representative in Congress, I remain committed to addressing food and job insecurity issues in the months ahead.

On this Thanksgiving, I am thankful that those who have come before have made it so I can spend time with my family and friends—to celebrate, to eat, and perhaps to watch a little football. And I am grateful for everyone who has trusted me enough to send me to Congress so that I can work to help those Hoosiers whose Thanksgiving will be more difficult this year. To Hoosiers in the 7thDistrict and throughout the great State of Indiana, Mariama and I wish you a happy and safe Thanksgiving!
