In this week's Carson Courier:

  • Central Indiana Job Fair
  • Debt Ceiling Vote

Central Indiana Job Fair

Far too many Hoosiers suffer the financial and emotional strains of unemployment or underemployment. Creating new jobs and protecting existing American jobs from being sent overseas is my number one priority in Congress. I am also doing everything I can to connect job seekers with companies that are currently hiring. That's why I am hosting the Central Indiana Job Fair in cooperation with Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUI.

This event will take place on Friday, August 12th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at IUPUI's Campus Center in downtown Indianapolis. The job fair will provide attendees with an opportunity to speak with a diverse group of companies from various sectors that are looking to hire new employees here in Central Indiana. More than 60 employers with approximately 1,000 available jobs will participate. I look forward to meeting with job seekers and employers on August 12th.

Debt Ceiling Vote

This week, Congress finally voted to raise the debt ceiling. While I was strongly opposed to defaulting on our nation's obligations, I could not in support this bill, which will cut funding for valuable programs that benefit working class Americans. I do not fault President Obama for making the deal in order to avoid significant damage to our economy. Nevertheless, I came to Washington to represent my constituents in the 7th District—many of whom were looking for a balanced approach to resolving this debt ceiling crisis. Regrettably under this debt ceiling legislation, oil companies earning billions and companies exporting American jobs sacrifice nothing. Millionaires and billionaires, whose historically low tax rates have not led to job creation, have not sacrificed anything. More troubling, this legislation contains a trigger gimmick, which will impose automatic cuts if Congress cannot reach agreement over the next twelve months. I fear that this trigger will simply encourage Republicans to refuse to compromise in order to inflict devastating cuts on working people and undermine the solvency of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
