Seniors to Receive $250 Medicare Checks This Week

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will begin sending out the first round of $250 checks to seniors who have fallen into Medicare's prescription drug coverage gap (known as the "donut hole"). This rebate for seniors is part of the landmark health-care reform bill that was signed into law this year.

Last year, roughly 81,800 Medicare beneficiaries in Indiana were impacted by the donut hole. These $250 checks will help seniors better afford their prescription drugs until a complete closure of the donut hole is phased in over the next several years. I recognize that every dollar counts for many seniors on fixed incomes. To that end, I will continue to support efforts to drive down the costs of health care for seniors.

Optimism for a Continued Economic Rebound

The past two and half years have been challenging for businesses, employees and families. And while times are still tough and we still have work to do, there are positive signs that the economy is improving. For the past five months, we have seen new jobs added. In Indiana alone, the Recovery Act has created or saved an estimated 64,000 jobs. A survey by Manpower Inc. also reported that for the third straight quarter U.S. employers have added jobs. Federal Housing Administration Reform Act

At the time of this release, the House was considering the FHA Reform Act, which will implement an unprecedented number of credit and risk management policy changes that ensure the safety and soundness of financial institutions and protect American taxpayers. I intend to support this bill because it improves underwriting standards and rebuilds FHA's capital reserves. These changes allow the FHA to continue assisting in the recovery of the housing market and to increase homeownership opportunities for qualified first-time homebuyers.
