Honoring our Teachers – Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7-11

This week, I surprised one of my former teachers with a Congressional Recognition for a lifetime of service to Indianapolis Public School students. Mr. Nathaniel Truedell has for decades instilled in the young men and women in his class far more than a love for music and theatre. His life lessons about confidence, team work, and achieving one's full potential had a profound impact on me. I am grateful for Mr. Truedell's commitment to education, and I know that his influence in my life has greatly impacted my work in Congress.

My visit to Mr. Truedell's classroom comes as part of Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place May 7-11. I encourage everyone to take the time next week to recognize the great teachers that have impacted their lives.

As your Representative for Indiana's 7th Congressional District, one of my top priorities is to ensure that our schools receive the funding they need to retain quality teachers and provide them with the necessary resources to educate all our children. Great teachers offer a great education, and our young people deserve nothing less.

On Your Corner

It has been a busy week here in Indianapolis, and I have had the privilege to take part in a number of great events. Some of the highlights from this week are included below:

REBUILDING TOGETHEROn Saturday, April 28th, hundreds of volunteers gathered for Rebuilding Together's "Game Day." The volunteers worked throughout the day to renovate 20 homes in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, providing much-need repairs and assistance to families in need. I was honored to take part in the event kick-off and for the opportunity to thank all of the volunteers for their commitment to our community. While to some, it may be just carpet, windows, or roofing. For many families, the work done over the weekend meant a new beginning and kept their homes livable.

EARTH DAY INDIANAOver the weekend, we celebrated Earth Day Indiana, an all day, outdoor festival that promotes environmental protection, conservation of natural resources and sustainable living. We also welcomed Yoshifumi Okamura, the Japanese Consul General in Chicago, as he presented cherry blossom trees as a symbol of the friendship between Japan and the City of Indianapolis.

GARDEN ON THE GOI joined IU Health's Garden on the Go for a stop at the Indianapolis Senior Center as part of its one-year anniversary celebration. Garden on the Go is an effort to improve availability of local produce for families throughout Marion County by bringing fruits and vegetables to "food deserts," areas within the city where neighbors lack access to affordable, healthy foods.
