The Passing of Two Hoosier Legends: Marilyn Glick and Rev. Boniface Hardin
I am deeply saddened by the recent passing of two Central Indiana Legends: Marilyn Glick and Reverend Boniface Hardin.
Marilyn Glick's extraordinary generosity and compassion transformed Indianapolis beyond description, and her philanthropic legacy is firmly cemented through establishments such as the Indiana History Center, the Marilyn Glick Eye Institute, and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
Reverend Boniface Hardin was a devoted and passionate leader who shepherded our great city through times of racial tumult and galvanized a new era of educational opportunity for young men and women growing up in Indianapolis. For forty years, Rev. Hardin dedicated his life to the civil rights movement and to the founding and administration of the area's only black-majority college, Martin University.
My thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends. Our city is a better place, and our community's future is brighter, because of their extraordinary work.

Democrats Introduce Alternative Budget Proposal
This week, Republicans in the House passed a budget proposal which would end the Medicare guarantee and increase costs for seniors, eliminate jobs, and cut taxes for the wealthy at the expense of middle- and working-class families. This went against everything I have heard from constituents from the 7th District who regularly reach out to urge Congress to pass a budget that works for all of us.
The Democratic budget proposal did just that by preserving the Medicare guarantee, investing in our recovering economy, setting us on a sustainable fiscal path, and calling upon all Americans to contribute their fair share to America's future. The Democratic budget proposal addressed the challenges we face and helps to restore the promise of our American Dream. Our budget made critical investments in education, innovation, infrastructure, and energy security, while also preserving our commitment to the brave men and women in the military who have so valiantly served our nation.
While the Democratic budget proposal did not pass the House, I remain hopeful that popular support for many of its proposals will encourage Republican leadership to bring them to a vote. In this time of recovery, we should all come together to support initiatives that will put Americans back to work and grow the economy—not cut programs that seniors and middle- and working-class families rely on.
Congressional Art Competition
My office is now accepting submissions for the 2012 Congressional Art Competition. This annual competition is open to local high school students and offers them an opportunity to be recognized for their incredible work. High school students are encouraged to submit original artwork such as paintings, drawings, collages, prints, computer-generated art and photography. Once submitted, a local panel of qualified judges will select one piece of artwork that will be sent to Washington, D.C. This artwork will represent the 7th Congressional District of Indiana and will hang in the United States Capitol for the entire year.
The first place winner will also be invited to Washington, D.C. to attend a reception honoring winners from across the country. This year's honorable mentions will have their artwork displayed in the Indiana Black Expo's Cultural Art Pavilion during Summer Celebration in July. These winners will also be invited to participate in the opening reception of the Cultural Art Pavilion.
Those interested must submit artwork to the 7th District Congressional Office in Indianapolis at 300 East Fall Creek Parkway North Drive, Suite 300 by 5:30pm on Friday, April 27, 2012. Artwork should have the durability necessary to withstand some travel and should be no larger than 28"x28"x4".
