Economic Recovery Gathers Strength

Every week, there are new signs that our economy is on the rebound, nearly two years since the "Great Recession." In the current issue of Newsweek, Daniel Gross highlighted several indicators which signal that the economy is coming back stronger and faster than expected. The article, entitled "The Comeback Country," discusses how swift action by both public and private sectors, along with the remarkable ingenuity and innovative drive of the American people, helped to significantly boost economic output last year.

For example, Gross notes that in the first quarter of 2009, the economy was shrinking at a 6.4 percent annual rate. However, by the fourth quarter last year it was growing at a 5.9 percent rate-an increase of more than 12 percentage points. For a $14 trillion dollar economy, that is a remarkable turnaround in less than one year.

Breaking Ground on a State-of-the-Art Health Center on Near-Eastside

Last week, I was pleased to join HealthNet President Booker Thomas and a host of community leaders to break ground on a new, state-of-the-art health center on the Near-Eastside. This new facility, called the People's Health and Dental Center, will allow HealthNet to increase patient visits and improve the quality of care for thousands of local residents who see their primary care physician through the HealthNet system.

The expansion and improvement of health centers like this is but one example of how our nation is increasing access to affordable medical care through the new health reform law. This historic health care bill, signed into law by President Obama, provides unprecedented resources to increase the network of community health centers in this nation. Thanks to the new health reform law, millions of dollars will be spent to enable more than 33 centers in the 7th District to expand and enhance health services.
