Economic Stimulus Saves Over Three Million Jobs
This week, the USA Today reported that the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act passed by Congress in 2009 boosted employment by nearly 3.6 million jobs and increased the nation's annual economic output by almost $400 billion. In addition, two prominent economists have credited the Recovery Act for averting the "Great Depression 2.0." This report only helps to reinforce what many critics seem to have forgotten-the Recovery Act turned around an economy that was losing 750,000 jobs a month under the Bush Administration. The Recovery Act delivered tax cuts, financial aid to state governments, emergency unemployment assistance and funds for infrastructure projects. Since its enactment last year, this critical bill has pulled the economy out of a free fall and created and sustained American jobs.
Of course, there is still much work to do to get our local economy on track and put hard-working Hoosiers on their feet and back to work. But this report on the Recovery Act is a clear sign that our efforts in Washington are steering us towards long-term stability and growth.

Kicking Off Hunger Awareness Month
During these economic times, too many Americans are struggling to put food on the table for themselves and their families. According to a United States Department of Agriculture report released earlier this summer, nearly 18 million students were at risk of going hungry at the end of the school year when they no longer had access to school lunch programs. While these numbers are startling, widespread hunger in our communities often goes unrecognized and unaddressed.
That's why I joined Senator Lugar and executives from JP Morgan Chase and Gleaners Food Bank this week to kick-off Hunger Awareness Month in downtown Indianapolis. This year, JP Morgan Chase graciously donated two refrigerated trucks to Gleaners to aid in their efforts to bring hunger relief to Hoosiers.
You can do your part to fight hunger in Indiana by donating non-perishable food items to Gleaners Food Bank or to your local food pantry.
