Dear Friend,
Thank you for reading another edition of my e-newsletter, the Carson Courier.
In this week's Carson Courier:
Supporting Indianapolis Improvement Projects
President Obama Announces FY 2010 Budget
Helping Needy Hoosiers to Secure Housing
SUPPORTING INDIANAPOLIS IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
Earlier this week, the House passed the Fiscal Year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which will fund the federal government and ensure that critical benefits such as Social Security, Medicare and VA health care continue to reach millions of people across Indiana. This legislation also distributes assistance to deserving local projects which have had difficulty securing funding through other sources.
Over several months of bipartisan negotiation, I had an opportunity to successfully advocate for the inclusion of several Marion County projects that have continually suffered from a lack of funding. Pending the passage of this legislation in the Senate, Indianapolis residents could soon see the benefit of nearly $6.8 million that has been allocated to a variety of local projects, including education grants, after school programs, crime prevention technology for police departments and the expansion of our public transportation system.
In these difficult economic times, I was proud to vote for legislation that brings such critical assistance to my fellow Hoosiers. These important projects account for hundreds of jobs and will greatly improve our underprivileged neighborhoods and communities. As the FY 2010 appropriations process begins, I will once again have an opportunity to stand up for working families by supporting projects that will bring unemployed Hoosiers back to work.
PRESIDENT OBAMA ANNOUNCES FY 2010 BUDGET
On Thursday, President Obama laid out the most ambitious yet honest budget that we have seen in several years. Through the expansion of health coverage, promotion of green industries, and reform of our education system, this budget will help put all Americans on the path towards economic recovery and prepare our nation for the modern challenges of 21st Century.
After eight years of consistently disappointing budgetary results, I am glad to see President Obama's renewed concern for the long-term needs of Indianapolis residents. For the first time in a long while, we can all hope to see the full funding of high quality programs that are designed for cities like ours. As this new budget makes its way through Congress, I look forward to working with the Obama Administration to implement quality programs that will create jobs, refurbish crumbling infrastructure and strengthen our public schools.
HELPING NEEDY HOOSIERS TO SECURE HOUSING
Up to 7,500 people will experience homelessness in our city this year and thousands more will face the impending prospect of homelessness or living in unsafe, substandard housing conditions.
Following last week's enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, nearly $12.5 million will be headed to Indianapolis for housing and community development efforts. These grant dollars will put Hoosiers to work improving and modernizing challenged public housing developments, ensuring the health and safety of low-income households and increasing the availability of quality, affordable housing.
This funding, which is the first in a long line of stimulus funding Indianapolis will soon receive, is a great example of what the stimulus package was intended to do – create jobs while addressing the real needs of working people and struggling communities. I am pleased to see that this legislation has begun improving our city so quickly and I eagerly look forward to announcing future awards that will rebuild the prosperous economy we have enjoyed in Indianapolis for so many years.
Thank you for reading the Carson Courier. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and concerns. I value your views and your input helps me to better represent the people of Indiana's Seventh District in Congress.
