Feeding Indy's Youth

On Tuesday, I helped kickoff the "Summer Servings" program, which will provide free meals to Indianapolis youth to reduce child hunger in our communities. Summer Servings is part of an effort by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide nutritious meals to children in low-income areas during the summer months when the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs are not available. In Indianapolis, Summer Servings is administered locally through the Indiana Department of Education to youth ages 18 and under at 230 sites across Marion County. Proper nutrition is the smartest investment we can make in the lives of our children. I'm proud of this program and the continued federal commitment to the Summer Food Service Program.

Senior Forum on Medicare

The proposed 2012 Republican budget ends Medicare as we know it by instituting an unproven voucher system administered by the private health insurance industry. This will have a serious impact on Hoosiers. This week I met with over 100 seniors at the Southeast Community Service Center to listen to their concerns about the proposed changes. Under the guise of debt reduction, the Republican's plan increases prescription drug costs for millions of seniors while eliminating free preventative services provided under the Affordable Care Act. Recent reports have estimated that a typical senior would have to spend $20,000 to receive the equivalent services they now receive from Medicare. This leaves seniors to pay at least double in new out-of-pocket expenses by 2020. We must address our nation's debt, but I won't support making seniors sacrifice more so Republicans can preserve tax breaks for millionaires and oil companies.
