Fifty Years Later: Honoring the Civil Rights Act
A Note from Congressman Carson
Dear Friend,
As Black History Month comes to a close, I believe it is fitting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and reflect on its significance. The passing of this legislation serves as an important milestone in the struggle for equality in our county.
It is astonishing to reflect that just 50 years ago, the daily lives of Americans were divided along racial lines with the institutionalized belief of "separate but equal." The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended the segregation of schools and other public places, making it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It also prohibited unequal application related to voting registration requirements, which often kept African-Americans from exercising their right to vote. The landmark act of 1964 paved the way for future legislation resulting in the rights that we enjoy today.
Although our country has come a long way in protecting the civil rights of its citizens, we must continue to build on this important work. We must be vigilant to fight efforts that undermine our progress! I will continue to support legislation that reinforces equal rights and opportunities for all and hope you will join me in this cause.
As always, my office is available to be of assistance to you. Please feel free to contact meif there is anything I can do to help.
Regards,
André

Meet our new intern, Sean!
Sean Cross is a 21 year-old junior in George Mason University's Mason LIFE program, a post-secondary educational opportunity for individuals with intellectual and developmental needs. Originally from Herndon, VA, Sean managed his high school's football team and was a star player on their wrestling team, which sparked his interest in sports. This passion for sports got Sean the jobs of wrestling and football manager for George Mason's Patriot teams (and even got him on the news!).
Sean has two sisters, a cat, and a dog, and he loves them all very much. One of my sisters she is a sophomore at Lehigh University and one of my sisters is a sophomore at South Lakes High School. His dad want to UVA and mom started at Virginia Tech then went on to George Mason University. One day, Sean hopes to work for a news network as a weather man. Sean is very excited to be a part of Team Carson and can't wait to learn more about Indiana's very welcoming 7th district!
