Free Health Screenings and Workshops This Friday
Several local organizations will provide free health screenings and informational workshops at the 2012 Community Health Fair on Friday, October 26th, 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center.
The 2012 Community Health Fair, which I'm hosting in cooperation with the Minority Health Coalition of Marion County, will provide free blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose screenings, and a limited number of flu shots will also be given. Attendees may also participate in workshops regarding the Affordable Care Act, nutrition and diabetes, and heart disease.
Come out, say hello, and take advantage of this great public health opportunity.
For more information, please call our office at 317-283-6516.
Breaking Ground on the Illinois Place Apartments
For the last 8 years, the site of the old Winona Hospital has been a haven for crime and an obstacle to growth in Indy's Mid-North Neighborhood. As challenges for the area persisted, it was critical that we take action. By securing more than $2 million in federal funds, we cleared the way for new possibilities, and this week, I was honored to join Mayor Ballard, Jeff Patchen of the Children's Museum, Joe Whitsett, and a number of community partners as we broke ground (symbolically, due to rain) on the Illinois Place Apartments.
Not only will this new development provide affordable housing, retail opportunities, and green space, it will serve as a driving force for the Mid-North Community's future.

WNBA Champions Carry on Tradition of Basketball Excellence
I had the privilege this week of joining the WNBA Champion Indiana Fever for a victory celebration at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis. I want to commend Mr. Herb Simon, Mr. Jim Morris, Coach Dunn, and the ladies of the Fever for an extraordinary conclusion to their season.
As I said at the rally, the secret is out: Indianapolis and Indiana are America's best kept secret, and the Fever made it happen.
