Honoring Montford Point Marine Averitte Corley
As part of this year's Independence Day celebration in Lawrence, I was honored to present the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal to Montford Point Marine Averitte Corley. Since the American Revolution, the United States Congress has issued this award to a select number of people and institutions, including American icons like Rosa Parks, Elie Wiesel, and Neil Armstrong. It was a truly humbling experience to welcome Mr. Corley and his fellow Montford Point Marines into this impressive company.
The Montford Point Marines were the first African-Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corp, receiving their training at segregated Montford Point in North Carolina. Over 20,000 African-American Marines were trained at Montford Point from 1942 to 1949, and despite facing ongoing racial tension and prejudice, these American heroes served their country with honor and valor. As a direct result of their courage and commitment, President Truman ended segregation in the U.S. Armed Forces in 1948.
I congratulate Mr. Corley, and all of the Montford Point Marines, on this incredible honor. Thank you for your service and commitment.
Republican Cuts would Impact 46 Million Americans
Thanks to the efforts of President Obama, we have seen marked economic improvement in the last few years. The American Recovery Act, which I proudly supported in the previous Congress, provided funding that saved millions of manufacturing jobs, invested in infrastructure, and vastly reduced our dependence on foreign oil.
But despite these improvements, 46 million Americans are still living below the poverty line. Many families struggle to get basic nutrition, and many of our seniors, facing depleted retirement savings, now have to make the agonizing choice between buying groceries or taking their medication. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a vital lifeline for those most vulnerable—our children, seniors and the disabled.
Some of my colleagues in Congress like to speak abstractly about inefficiency and wasteful spending, and they have now made clear their intention to cut billions of dollars from essential nutrition programs like SNAP, leaving tens of millions of Americans without assistance.
I, too, want to cut wasteful spending, but not at the expense of our most vulnerable neighbors. In light of high gas prices and record profits, I am confident that large oil companies like Exxon will thrive and remain competitive without billions of dollars from taxpayers. If we are going to have that conversation, let. That's not why I came to Washington to represent all Hoosiers in the 7th District of Indiana.

Voter Registration? There's an app for that.
This November, voters across Indianapolis and throughout the United States will have the opportunity to choose who will represent them in Washington and in state and local offices. A new voter registration app has been added to my official
website to provide information about the candidates, your polling location and other useful tips to make it even easier to participate in the upcoming election.
