House Passes Financial Reform

After months of hearings and debate, we are one step closer to historic reform that will finally protect American consumers from falling victim to the dangerous gambles made on Wall Street. This week the House approved, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Two years ago our economy was brought to the brink of collapse because of misguided and destructive practices from the financial industry. This legislation will address the countless causes that led to the meltdown - from predatory lending to unregulated derivatives. It includes strong consumer protections aimed at restoring transparency and fairness as well as end taxpayer-funded bailouts and ‘too big to fail' financial institutions. These reforms are nothing short of historic, and I look forward to the day when the Senate acts and the President signs this important legislation into law.

HHS Unveils New Consumer Focused Health Care Website

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently unveiled an innovative new website this week, HealthCare.gov. This site hosts a wealth of clear, jargon-free information that will help Hoosiers know what insurance options they have available to them. One of the main goals of Health Insurance Reform was to put Americans in control of their health care, and this website is an important step in that direction.

By inputting just a few pieces of background information - such as state, age range, and current insurance status-a list of both private and public health insurance options will be generated. Starting in October, price estimates will be available, creating a marketplace that is transparent and competitive. It will enable consumers to compare both the quality and the cost of their health insurance options so they can choose what plan works best for them.

Adding Jobs in Indianapolis

Our economy continues to shows of recovery. This week Indianapolis-based Allison Transmission announced a $130 million investment that will retool existing plant space to build a newly-developed hybrid transmission. This newest production line-which will create 100 new, well-paying jobs-was supported by a $62.8 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It is my hope that Allison's success will provide a blueprint for even more growth in the decades to come.

To be prepared for the jobs of the future, job training is essential. To that end, I was pleased to join U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis this week to announce a Community-Based Job Training Grant that will help put Hoosiers back to work. The $2.9 million grant was awarded to the Indianapolis Private Industry Council to fund recruitment of unemployed, dislocated and incumbent workers for training in the information technology sector.  As a result of this grant, hundreds of Hoosiers will receive the training they need to regain employment. By focusing on the IT industry, including the emerging health information technology sector, Indianapolis continues to show it's a leader in these high-growth industries, which have the long-term potential to support even more new jobs in Central Indiana.
