Central Indiana Job Fair
Far too many Hoosiers suffer the financial and emotional strains of unemployment or underemployment. Creating new jobs and protecting existing American jobs from being sent overseas is my number one priority in Congress. I am also doing everything I can to connect job seekers with companies that are currently hiring. That's why I am hosting the Central Indiana Job Fair in cooperation with Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUI.
This event will take place on Friday, August 12th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at IUPUI's Campus Center in downtown Indianapolis. The job fair will provide attendees with an opportunity to speak with a diverse group of companies from various sectors that are looking to hire new employees here in Central Indiana. I look forward to meeting with job seekers and employers on August 12th.

First Anniversary of Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act
In the fall of 2008, we witnessed the most devastating financial crisis since the Great Depression. As a result, millions of jobs were lost, many had their 401(K)s and retirement savings decimated, and millions more lost their homes. After months of hearings and contentious debate in Congress, President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act into law. This week marked the one year anniversary of the historic enactment of Dodd-Frank.
One of the highlights of this law is the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a new consumer watchdog housed in the Federal Reserve devoted to protecting Americans from unfair and abusive financial practices. The CFPB will require banks and credit card companies to provide clear and accurate information to families and small businesses to ensure that bank loans, mortgages and credit cards are fair and affordable.
Yet at every turn, Republicans seek to weaken, delay and erode these protections. Too many hard working families have paid the price for mistakes made by an irresponsible and unregulated Wall Street. Americans deserve the protection that Dodd-Frank and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau provides.
This week, President Obama nominated former Ohio Attorney General, Richard Cordray, to serve as Director of the CFPB. It is my sincere hope that the Senate will promptly confirm Mr. Cordray and that Republicans will stop their efforts to block nominees and prevent these needed consumer protections from being implemented.

Standing up for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
As we approach the August 2nd deadline for raising the debt ceiling, the President and Congress are working towards a solution that will ensure our nation will fulfill its commitment to paying its debts. Nearly thirty years ago during a similarly contentious debt ceiling debate, President Ronald Reagan wrote then-Majority Leader, Howard Baker, saying: "This country now possesses the strongest credit in the world. The full consequences of a default…by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate."
President Reagan's words are still true today. I remain committed to finding a workable solution to raise the debt ceiling and get our fiscal house in order. While we must make tough choices, we must not sacrifice programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, which provide an essential social safety-net for middle and working class Americans. We should instead close tax loopholes for millionaires, oil companies, and corporations who ship our jobs overseas. I also feel that before we take a single dollar from Medicare and Social Security, we should reinvest the dollars that could be gained from scaling back our military engagements.
