Central Indiana Job Fair
Far too many Hoosiers suffer the financial and emotional strains of unemployment or underemployment. Creating new jobs and protecting existing American jobs from being sent overseas is my number one priority in Congress. I am also doing everything I can to connect job seekers with companies that are currently hiring. That's why I am hosting the Central Indiana Job Fair in cooperation with Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUI.
This event will take place on Friday, August 12th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at IUPUI's Campus Center in downtown Indianapolis. The job fair will provide attendees with an opportunity to speak with a diverse group of companies from various sectors that are looking to hire new employees here in Central Indiana. I look forward to meeting with job seekers and employers on August 12th.

Debt Ceiling Debate
The debate over raising the debt ceiling to prevent a default on our nation's financial obligations occupied the debate this week in Washington. Republicans have continued to refuse compromise and put politics before the nation's best interests. The proposal approved by House Republicans doesn't answer our long term fiscal problems and threatens the same kind of economic uncertainty again six months from now. It's time to actually work together on a solution instead of posturing and knowingly advance legislation that the Senate and President have made clear will ultimately fail.
Celebrating the 46th Anniversary of Medicare
This week we celebrate the 46th anniversary of Medicare. Its passage was an enormous step forward in ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens get the health care they need. After a lifetime of work, Americans should not have to worry about access to high-quality health insurance. The Medicare program has provided essential health care coverage and economic security to millions of American seniors. Before it, roughly half of older adults in our nation had no health care coverage. Today, nearly all seniors are covered by Medicare, and they rely on it to cover essential health services. Recently many Republican lawmakers are threatening deep cuts to Medicare under the guise of reducing the federal debt. I have spoken to many seniors at the Medicare forums I have hosted in the 7th District and they have made it very clear that balancing the budget by slashing Medicare benefits is unacceptable.
Improving Fuel Efficiency
President Obama's announcement to improve fuel efficiency builds on the efforts of Democrats in Congress to save families money, reduce harmful emissions, and lessen our dependence on foreign oil. This move will encourage American entrepreneurship, as innovators race to build the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles and it will underscore the truth that we all have a stake in addressing the challenges of energy independence.
