Central Indiana Job Fair
Creating new jobs and protecting existing American jobs from being sent overseas is my number one priority in Congress. I am doing everything I can to connect jobseekers with companies that are currently hiring. Last Week, I hosted my 2nd Annual Central Indiana Job Fair in cooperation with Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUI. I was pleased that nearly 1,000 Hoosiers came out to meet with the 75 employers who were in attendance. Too many Hoosiers suffer the financial and emotional strains of unemployment or underemployment, and it my hope that those who attended were able to find their next job.

Meeting with Seniors to Discuss Medicare
This week, I hosted my third panel of experts to address the questions and concerns of seniors regarding their Medicare coverage and to discuss the impact the debt ceiling deal may have on this invaluable program. Many of my constituents were dismayed by earlier efforts from Republican leaders in the House to increase prescription drug costs for millions of seniors and eliminate free preventive services seniors receive under the Affordable Care Act. While the most recent budget deal fortunately avoided direct cuts, Medicare payments to doctors and hospitals for services provided to seniors are under attack. While I recognize the urgent need to reduce the deficit, our seniors – many of whom live on fixed incomes – should not be asked to unfairly shoulder the burden to preserve tax breaks for millionaires and oil corporations that are making record profits.
Medicare is not simply an entitlement program that starts at age 65 – it is a promise forged with all Americans. After working their entire lives and contributing to the economy and their communities, Americans deserve access to reliable, affordable medical coverage. I am committed to ensuring that this sacred trust between America and its seniors remains intact.

7th District Events
I attended several events this week including the grand opening of the new HealthNet People's Health & Dental Center. This new health center will expand care for the underserved and was made possible by $5.3 million in stimulus funds that I helped secure. The health center sets a new standard for patient care, delivering thousands of patient visits every year. The center is located in the East 10th St. business corridor, which is already undergoing many renovations through the 2012 Super Bowl Legacy Project.
I also helped dedicate the Lieutenant Junior Grade Graham Edward Martin Park in honor of one of the first African-American commissioned and warrant officers in the U.S. Navy. Martin, an Indianapolis native, and his 12 colleagues became known as "The Golden Thirteen."

Tragedy at the State Fair
Last Saturday's accident at the Indiana State Fair was a tragedy for our city and our state. But out of this heartbreak, heroes emerged and lives were saved because of the selfless acts of those in attendance. Rather than run for shelter, hundreds instead rushed to the scene to help rescue those trapped under the collapsed stage rigging. At Monday's memorial service, I was touched by how our community came together to honor the victims and their families. Please keep them and those still recovering in your prayers.
