Central Indiana Job Fair

As the economy continues to recover, employers all across Central Indiana are looking to meet with jobseekers. That's why I'm hosting the Central Indiana Job Fair, in cooperation with Ivy Tech Community College.

The job fair will take place Wednesday, August 25th from 9 AM to 3 PM at IUPUI's Campus Center in Downtown Indianapolis. The event is free and will provide jobseekers an opportunity to speak with a diverse group of companies from various sectors that are looking to hire new employees here in Central Indiana.

For more details on the event, please call my office at (317) 283-6516 or click Here to register.

Emergency Aid Package Saves Jobs, Taxpayers' Money

The economic environment over the past two-and-a-half years has resulted in severe budget cuts for many states including Indiana. This week I returned to Washington to pass the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act to ensure that hundreds of thousands of teachers, police officers, firefighters and nurses can remain on the job. Just in time for the beginning of the school year, some 3,600 teachers in Indiana, including 640 in the 7th District, will be where they are needed most - in the classroom. Our young people and our local communities should not suffer as a result of budget shortfalls, nor should they have to choose between educating their children and having police and firefighters on their block. Also provided in the legislation is $16.1 billion in health assistance to the states. Earlier this year, 42 governors wrote to Congress seeking Medicaid assistance - including Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Indiana will now see Medicaid savings of $227 million because of the legislation. In addition, this emergency aid package is full paid for and actually reduces the deficit by $1.4 billion by closing a loophole that encourages corporations to move American jobs overseas.

Third Round of Medicare Checks Being Sent to Seniors

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will begin mailing the third round of $250 checks to senior citizens who have fallen into Medicare's prescription drug coverage gap known as the "donut hole." This rebate is part of the landmark health care reform bill signed into law this year.

Last year, over 81,000 Hoosiers fell into the donut hole and were forced to pay for 100 percent of the cost of their prescriptions. These checks will help more than 750,000 eligible seniors better afford their prescription drugs until a complete closure of the donut hole is phased in over the next few years. For seniors living on fixed incomes, every dollar counts. You can rest assured that I will continue to support efforts to drive down the costs of health care for seniors.
