Job Fair, Kicking Off YouthBuild Indy and Small Business Roundtable -- August 20, 2010

Next week's Central Indiana Job Fair hosted by my office in collaboration with Ivy Tech will feature over 80 employers and more than 2,000 jobs (and counting).

The job fair will take place Wednesday, August 25th from 9 AM to 3 PM at IUPUI's Campus Center in Downtown Indianapolis and it's free of charge. This event will provide jobseekers with an opportunity to speak with a diverse group of companies from various sectors that are looking to hire new employees here in Central Indiana.

This week I joined Mayor Greg Ballard and partnering organizations to kick off the construction training phase of the $2.2 million YouthBuild Indy program. This program, which is operated by the Indianapolis Private Industry Council and funded through a competitive grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, will provide young men and women, ages 18 to 24, with academic instruction, construction training and leadership and career development skills. It will be made available to low-income participants who have dropped out of school, not yet earned their GED certificate, and have committed to being drug free.

Indianapolis-native and Small Business Administration (SBA) Deputy Administrator Marie Johns and I met with local female business owners for a discussion about the issues and concerns affecting their local companies. The primary purpose of this roundtable was to discuss ways in which the SBA can better provide assistance and opportunities to local businesses, including women-and minority-owned small businesses that are looking to expand operations.

Entrepreneurs and small businesses are one of the greatest drivers of economic growth in the United States and are absolutely critical in our struggle to end our ongoing recession. Through the continued outreach of officials like Marie Johns, the SBA will continue to improve its services so that small businesses in Indianapolis can take advantage of these programs designed to help entrepreneurs grow their business and put more Hoosiers to work.
