A Note from Congressman Carson

Dear Friend,

On Monday, we will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his transformational struggle for human rights. Through this annual celebration, we will commemorate the timeless values of service, courage, and sacrifice that continue to influence our world today.

Dr. King inspired generations of individuals to fight for freedom, justice, and equity for all. He, along with other civil rights leaders like John Lewis, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X, paved the way for African Americans to fully enjoy the rights guaranteed to every citizen of our great nation. These leaders inspired me to become active in my community at an early age, and I often reflect on their lessons as I represent Hoosiers in Congress. On this day honoring Dr. King, I hope that that future generations will look to his example and learn the power of words, nonviolent resistance, and civil disobedience to inspire change.

In honor of Dr. King's legacy, it is my hope that each of us will take some time to help one another in some way. Whether it is feeding the hungry, tutoring children, and helping revitalize our neighborhoods, I encourage you to dedicate some of your time and talents to make our community a better place for all to live and work. I look forward to doing my part and I hope you will join me.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Julia Carson memorialized with Bronze Bust

Yesterday was a truly remarkable day for residents of Indianapolis when the late Congresswoman Julia Carson was honored with a historic bronze bust to be displayed at the Indiana Statehouse. Congresswoman Julia Carson was Indiana's first African American and first woman from Indianapolis elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressman André Carson shared memories of his grandmother after the unveiling. "My grandmother had a special connection with the Hoosiers she represented and she tirelessly advocated for them in Congress," said Congressman Carson. "This bust is a remembrance of her legacy – compassionate, bold, and collaborative leadership for those who need it most. It is truly humbling to see her service to the Indianapolis community honored in this way." Below are a few pictures from the event.
