Meeting with Seniors to Discuss GOP Plans to Cut Medicare
On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of meeting with seniors in Pike Township to discuss the impact that the 2012 House Republican budget will have on Medicare. Many expressed concerns about Republican efforts to increase prescription drug costs for millions of seniors and eliminate the free preventive services seniors receive under the Affordable Care Act. Recent studies estimate that a typical senior would need to spend $20,000 more to receive health care equivalent to what Medicare currently provides, leaving seniors to pay at least double in new, out-of-pocket expenses by 2020. While I recognize the urgent need to reduce the deficit, our seniors – many of whom live on fixed incomes – should not be asked to unfairly shoulder such a burden to preserve tax breaks for millionaires and oil companies.

Celebrating Pride Month
June 28th marks the 41st anniversary of the historic Stonewall Inn riots in New York City – a pivotal series of demonstrations led by supporters and members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. To commemorate the protests that sparked the LGBT civil rights movement across America, President Bill Clinton recognized June as LGBT Pride Month in 2000. In the years since, Democrats in Congress have ushered in historic gains for the LGBT community, passing the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2009 and voting to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law that prohibited LGBT individuals from serving openly in the military. I ask all my constituents to join me and our friends in the LGBT community in celebrating LGBT Pride Month.
Visiting the Andrew Academy
Yesterday, I visited with the administrators, teachers, and students at the Andrew Academy. It was wonderful to hear the teachers' success stories and to see their positive impact on the Academy students. The teachers' enthusiasm and dedication to their craft was inspiring, and I am confident the exceptionally bright students with whom I met have the potential to become leaders of tomorrow.
