Dear Friend,
Thank you for reading another edition of my weekly e-newsletter, the Carson Courier. For additional information on these and other topics, please visit my website at https://www.carson.house.gov.
In this week's Carson Courier:
Creating Hoosier Jobs
Securing Funding for Our Schools
CREATING HOOSIER JOBS
So far this year, over 760,000 jobs have been lost across the United States and Indiana's unemployment rate has increased by nearly 2%. Without Congressional intervention to reverse the damaging economic policies of the Bush Administration many more Hoosiers could lose their jobs over the next year.
Earlier this year, I offered my support to legislation that seeks to create 2 million new "green collar" jobs by offering tax incentives to companies that invest in the production of green technologies. Spurred by the recent increase in gas prices and concerns about global warming, these industries have the potential for rapid growth. As our economy enters a recession, the jobs created by this flourishing industry will provide much needed employment opportunities for millions of Americans who are looking for work.
In addition, America's aging transportation infrastructure also presents us with an excellent opportunity to bring thousands of unemployed Americans back to work. Over the last 50 years the number of vehicles using our nation's highway system has nearly quadrupled. Following the collapse of Minnesota's I-35W bridge it became apparent that immediate renovation was necessary to prevent further tragedy. I proudly worked with my House colleagues to pass legislation that will allocate over $8 billion to the Highway Trust Fund for renovation projects that will create jobs for thousands of unemployed Hoosiers.
SECURING FUNDING FOR OUR SCHOOLS
I am pleased to announce that the Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center in partnership with George Washington Community High School secured a 5-year, full service community schools grant totaling $2.48 million.
Full Service Community Schools, like the George Washington School Community School, provide more than just academic lessons for its students. By partnering with three neighborhood community centers – Mary Rigg, Hawthorne Community Center and Christamore House – and their 50 plus community partners, it will work with students and their families to provide additional services such as mentoring and tutoring, health care services, fitness classes, job training, counseling, adult education and parenting classes.
I was at the George Washington Community School when the announcement was made about this grant. I was so honored to have supported this community in its quest for such a tremendous award, and I would like to once again extend my congratulations to the George Washington Community School, the community centers and all the individuals who played a proactive role in securing this grant.
Thank you for reading the Carson Courier. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your thoughts and concerns or if I can ever be of assistance to you. I value your views and your input helps me to better represent the people of Indiana's Seventh District in Congress.
