14 Years of the Affordable Care Act.

In March of 2010, the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare,” was signed into law. 14 years later, it’s still making an impact.

The Affordable Care Act is known as President Obama’s signature accomplishment, but it did not pass without controversy. Democrats rallied behind this historic bill because we see quality healthcare as a right, not a privilege. Before the Affordable Care Act, patients could be denied coverage based on preexisting conditions, and the cost of basic, lifesaving prescriptions was too often out of reach.

The Affordable Care Act passed despite opposition from far-right extremists, who tried to block these critical protections for people with preexisting conditions and the expansion of free contraception. Unfortunately, the Affordable Care Act is under threat, including a from a former President who has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act altogether.

That’s why we can’t stop defending the Affordable Care Act.

There’s no doubt this monumental bill has helped our nation. The number of Americans enrolled in health insurance has doubled, and this year, 21 million Americans are enrolled in Affordable Care Act coverage – a record high. Thanks to legislation I voted for to improve and strengthen the Affordable Care Act, four out of five customers can find insurance plans for $10 or less a month.

Free preventative care like yearly checkups, vaccines, contraceptives, and cancer screenings have allowed for early detection of treatable conditions, saving lives. And although we have more work to do, we’ve seen historic gains in health coverage for Black Americans and underserved communities.

Success Story of the Week:

“I was in a situation about to face homelessness while waiting on a disability decision. I contacted André Carson, and his staff was able to get my backpay and monthly income released in a matter of days where usually I would have had to wait months. The work of this staff was a lifesaver. I’m glad I contacted them. This was the only Representative that contacted me back and got Social Security to expedite the review process. I am very thankful to André Carson and his staff for their incredible work.”
