22 years later.

It’s hard to forget that devasting day.

On September 11, 2001, our nation was changed forever. While 22 years have passed, the physical and emotional scars remain.

Unfortunately, even today, 9/11 first responders still struggle to receive the healthcare they need to address injuries and illnesses sustained from the attacks and the long aftermath of searches and recovery. Everyone deserves access to lifesaving healthcare – especially those who sacrificed so much for us.

First responders raced towards danger to save lives, and eventually, to give peace and closure to terrified families looking for their loved ones. Now it’s our turn to take care of these heroic first responders. That’s why I will continue to support measures like the Supporting Our First Responders Act to take care of all the brave men and women – and their families – who continue to keep us safe. They deserve our help, now more than ever.

As we reflect on the 22nd anniversary of 9/11, we also must address the scars left on the Muslim American community. Last week, I joined my colleagues in a resolution recognizing the tragedy of September 11th and calling out the hatred, xenophobia, and racism the plagued American Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Sikh communities.

In just the first month after the attack, there were 945 incidents of bias and hate against Americans perceived to be of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent. Even Muslim first responders did not receive the respect they deserved. Instead of being honored for their bravery and sacrifice, they too often were met with hostility.

Part of the healing from September 11th is to recognize its impact on every aspect of our country. Today especially, it’s important for Americans to reflect, share thoughts and memories with loved ones, and make a vow to move forward together as one united country.

The House is Back in Session:

Tomorrow, the House is back in session after a month-long District Work Period. Our top assignment? Pass 12 annual appropriations bills to keep our government running when the new fiscal year begins on October 1st so we can address the needs of working Americans.

Unfortunately, partisan bickering has stalled these bills.  Extremist Members are fighting to make bigger cuts to food assistance, foreign aid, and other attention-grabbing political stunts that do nothing to help us govern responsibly and with compassion for the good of the people.  In one case, a single lawmaker has held up the confirmations of over 300 Defense Department officers, which undermines our national security and is no way to govern.

As your Congressman, my priority is simple: you. I will continue fighting for hardworking, everyday Hoosiers who deserve relief from rising costs, medical bills, and expenses necessary to take care of their families. Hoosiers rely on government programs to survive, whether it’s countless veterans receiving VA healthcare and benefits, seniors on Social Security and Medicare, or children who need healthy meals before or during school.  These critical government programs make a big difference in the lives of millions of Americans. We should be fighting to strengthen these programs, not interrupt services or take them away.

As threats of government shutdowns loom, my office is here to answer any questions. But make no mistake: I will continue to fight against partisan bickering and grand-standing in Washington, and for the working-class Americans who make our country great.
