$25 MILLION for Indy roads
Grant Funding Announcement!
The United States is in its infrastructure decade – and I’m making sure Indianapolis is not left behind.
Today, I joined Mayor Hogsett, City-County Council President Osili, and other partners to announce Indianapolis will receive a $25 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant from the Department of Transportation (DOT).
This funding will help convert downtown Indianapolis streets from one-way directional traffic to two-way. Midwestern cities have reported significant success restoring two-way traffic on one-way streets for motor vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrian, including by:
- Calming and slowing traffic
- Causing fewer collisions
- Boosting connectivity, making it easier to get to and from downtown
- Spurring new development
The project will deliver road improvements from 38th Street to I-70 and will include 16 intersection improvements, 2 new traffic signals and 12 signal modifications, 49 lane miles resurfaces, 2 multi-use path miles, more than 300 curb ramp improvements, 3.5 sidewalk mile improvements, and 5.5 bike lane miles resurfaced.
With this grant and the ongoing projects from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re making historic investments in roads and bridges, sidewalks, rail, clean drinking water, public transit, and more.
This week, I also announced that IndyGo will receive over $19 million thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to invest in cleaner, greener buses to provide sustainable transportation. Public transit opens up opportunity for everyone in our city, and clean buses go a long way towards eliminating tailpipe pollution – a benefit for the present AND future of our community.
Eid Mubarak!
I was proud to join my Muslim friends in Indiana, the United States, and around the world in recognizing Eid al-Adha by introducing H. Res. 556.
The observance of Eid al-Adha is celebrated for 3 days and began Wednesday, June 28. Eid al-Adha is an Islamic holiday commemorating Abraham’s symbolic sacrifice of his son to God and marks the culmination of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, called Hajj. Approximately 2 million Muslims participated in Hajj this year, and approximately 1.8 billion Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha worldwide with prayers, charity, and social events.
Whether it is in the government, military or other leadership positions, Muslim Americans have always contributed to our country. Eid al-Adha is an inspiring occasion for my community to reflect on the importance of sacrifice, freedom, and justice – the same values that all Americans hold dear.
I was proud to introduce this resolution to recognize the importance of the Islamic faith in shaping our country and the incredible contributions of Muslim Americans.
Celebrating the Indianapolis Urban League
This week, I was honored to attend the Indianapolis Urban League’s Equal Opportunity Day, a chance to celebrate the Urban League’s commitment to training young leaders and entrepreneurs. Each year, Urban League’s impact grows as they continue to improve the lives of underserved and underemployed adults in our community.
When we open new opportunities and second chances, individuals succeed. Our city succeeds. And our society succeeds.
I’ll keep fighting for a more equitable city, state, and country, and I’m honored to partner with local organizations in the fight for fairness.
