90 Years of Social Security
This month marks 90 years of Social Security – 90 years of America keeping its promise to deliver Americans the benefits they’ve earned. Democrats created this program and today, we continue to protect it – especially as the Trump administration tries to cut and open the door to privatizing this essential program.
The creation of Social Security was a landmark moment for the Democratic Party. Since FDR signed Social Security into law 90 years ago, tens of millions of working Americans have an earned, guaranteed safety net every year. It lifts 22 million people out of poverty, including nearly one million children.
Republicans are pushing a false narrative that they are not attacking Social Security. But they blocked an amendment that would have ended taxation of benefits for everyone. Instead, they’ve given seniors a temporary, smaller tax cut that woefully falls short of their promise and threatens Social Security’s solvency.
The Trump administration has also threatened to close Social Security field offices. Earlier this year, DOGE announced plans to close the Minton Capehart Building in downtown Indianapolis – the site of our community’s most-used Social Security field office. I stepped in to help save it and will keep ensuring Social Security beneficiaries have access to the services they need.
I oppose any efforts to cut benefits or privatize Social Security. These changes would put hardworking Americans at risk, especially those who rely on Social Security as their primary source of income.
My office is also here to assist with accessing benefits and answering any questions, and to hear from you. No matter what – I will always defend and protect Social Security.
